Welcome to "My Family Lineage" - Genealogy, Family Tree Website. - Perhaps a better title would be Our Family Lineage. This website application has spent a great deal of time in development and planning. The question new visitors have is, "what can I do here?" Before directing you to the FAQ page, I'd like to offer a brief overview. Before listing what you can do, I want to mention what types of information is available. There are pages that describe individuals, as well as pages that describe Families. In addition, there are pages that describe the events in a persons life and on most of these pages you'll find information that one might describe as biographical in nature. Like all software and all websites we get ideas from our visitors and will expand the features that we offer in the future.

Here is a list of a few things you can do, in no particular order. If you are new, you might want to look around and find out what is available, so starting with the first two options might be good(some of these are actual links - so there are many ways to get to the same page or place).

  1. Browse by Surname to find web pages that describe Individuals with different surnames. This is sorted by first letter of last name.
  2. Use the Search box on every page to search for names, families and more.
  3. Find the Genealogy of famous poeple throughout history, such as Abraham Lincoln, an historic US President. These are publicly available GEDCOM files that can be downloaded and then imported into the site.
  4. If you have done Family Tree research or have collected information on your family tree, you will likely have this information in a software program. That program can export the information into a GEDCOM file which can be Uploaded and Imported into the website. The link is on the top menu and here: Upload and Import your GEDCOM
  5. Or Start with someone you know, like yourself and begin creating pages one by one, building your family tree as you go along.
  6. See a list of GEDCOMs that have been uploaded to the site Category:GEDCOM_Files
  7. To See the Actual GEDCOMS that have been imported go here ImportGEDCOM Page then click on list imported files.

Two Ways to Get Started

There are two ways to get started adding information to the website and to share your information with others... Discover new connections... collaborate with others... Share knowledge.

  1. Upload and Import your GEDCOM file - Most, if not all, genealogy software today can read GEDCOM files and let you save all of your family tree information, that you have collected, into a file format called GEDCOM, this page has more info. about what GEDCOM is. The file will usually be saved with an extension ged. You can then upload that GEDCOM file and all the information from that file will be imported into this site. There will be pages for each individual, for Families, as well as major events in a person's life, like Birth, Marriage and Graduation.
  2. Start with one person to begin building your family tree - You can start with yourself or if you don't want to use yourself start with a grandparent or other non-living ancestor/relative. You will be given an easy to use form for entering the information that you know about that person. When you save the form, you will see names that have red links (the text will appear red), which means when you click on those links, you will be able to create a page about that person using the same form.

Upload & Import a GEDCOM File

The above link will take you to a page where you can upload and import a GEDCOM file. This will create pages on the site for each Individual in the tree, as well as pages for events that are described in the GEDCOM. Here is a page on this site that has more information about GEDCOM and you can find information on the My Family Lineage site blog as well. See a list of GEDCOMs that have been uploaded to the site Category:GEDCOM_Files

Enter a Name: To Begin Creating A Family Tree

Just Enter the name of a person in the box, with the dates when the person lived immediately following (if known, or use ?), with no spaces between name and parentheses or between years and the dash inside the parentheses.

This is a suggested form for creating pages about individuals when discussing individuals that have lived at various times in history. However, it is true that more is needed to uniquely identify a person than just the years when the person lived.

An Example Tree

This is a graph with borders and nodes. Maybe there is an Imagemap used so the nodes may be linking to some Pages.
